Major Categories:
- Artificial Intelligence and Robotics:Smart students in this major look into ways of simulating, with computer hardware and software, human thought and action. Course work covers such topics as natural language processing, design, human factors, and computing theory.
- Computer and Information Sciences, General:Students in this major study a broad range of computer topics rather than focusing on more specific majors in this field. Once you’ve studied different types of computer and information technologies, you may decide to become an expert in one area.
- Computer and Information Systems Security:In this major, you'll learn to calculate the security needs of computer and network systems. You’ll learn to design and put into place solutions that safeguard computers with “cybersecurity” devices and procedures, such as cryptography.
- Computer Programming, Specific Applications:If you study this major, you’ll learn the basics of computer programming and adapting software to the needs of specific people and organizations. You’ll also be trained to install and maintain specialized software.
- Computer Programming, Vendor Certification:Students in this major become experts in a specific software product. Upon completion of the program, they are prepared to meet the certification requirements of the software vendor. They learn to install, customize, and maintain the software.
- Data Entry:Students learn how to enter data and text into computers using a variety of software. Topics of study include keyboarding, dictation, form reading, and more.
- Data Processing Technology:If you major in data processing technology you’ll learn how to input, store, and retrieve information by becoming an expert in computer software of all kinds, including word processing, spreadsheet, research, and design software.
- LAN and WAN Management:Majoring in LAN and WAN management will prepare you to oversee the computer system of an entire organization or a network of users. Your education will include managing and troubleshooting local area networks (LANs), usually confined to one building, and wide area networks (WANs), a system of LANs in multiple locations.
- Word Processing:Word processing majors learn how to use software to create, edit, and format text- and table-based documents. They practice doing so quickly and accurately. Topics of study include keyboarding, dictation, and the use of specific types of software.
